Flylady Swish and Swipe

Swish and swipe is when you use the toilet brush to swish the toilet, clear your daily items off your counter, and wipe down the counters. Flylady wants us to use a timer to time ourselves to see how fast we can get the bathroom presentable.

To make it a quick cleaning job, make sure every bathroom has all the cleaning products needed to clean the bathroom.

How I Swish – Master Bathroom

I started using the Flylady’s swish and swipe method/baby step before I began the Flylady 31 baby steps.

This is how I’ve been doing the swish baby step. Although, I do take it a step further because I have three potty-trained boys.

  1. Take out a disinfecting wipe(wear gloves if you have to) and wipe the top part of the toilet, the lid, and the seat. Of course, you might need to use more wipes if the toilet needs extra wiping. But if you do the swish and swipe baby steps every day, it does stay somewhat clean.
  2. Right after, I put my favorite toilet cleaner inside the toilet bowl and give the toilet bowl a quick swish, flush and let the toilet brush drip dry.

How I Swipe the Counter – Master Bathroom

Usually, I’m not particularly eager to keep a lot of things on my bathroom counters. So it’ll be quicker to take everything off the counter when it’s time to clean.

  1. Clear off the counter: put toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrush, make-up, and other random things off the counter.
  2. Use your favorite all purpose cleaner(I like method glass/all purpose cleaner) to spray the mirror, counter, and sink. Skip the mirror if it looks clean or spot clean the mirror.
  3. Grab a microfiber cloth and wipe the bathroom mirror, counter from top to bottom. I love using microfiber cloths because it leaves a streak-free mirror.
  4. Wipe the sink’s handles, faucet, and sink.
  5. If needed, rinse/wipe the soap bottle to wash away the soap scum on the bottle.
  6. Then wipe the sink with the same microfiber cloth, squeeze out the water, and dry the sink with the same cloth so that I don’t have any hard water spots on my sink.

Now the master bathroom is ready for company. But usually, the master bathroom doesn’t get as much use compared to my kids’/guests’ bathroom.

Swish and Swipe – Kids’ Bathroom

I take the swish and swipe step to an extra mile in the kids’ bathroom because their bathroom does get disgusting very quickly.

Whether it’s pee on the floor or toothpaste all over the mirror, counter, and sink. There’s always something to clean up.

So, in the 2nd bathroom. I repeat the swish and swipe steps, then add a few extra steps by wiping the kids’ potty training toilet seat, step stool, the base of the toilet, and the floor around the toilet.

Final Thoughts on Flylady Baby Steps Day 24

That’s how I do the Flylady’s swish and swipe baby step, but now I need to figure out if I should swish and swipe both bathrooms in my morning routine, one bathroom in the morning and the other in the evening, or do one bathroom per day.

What do you do when you have multiple bathrooms?

Update – A Few Years Later

I had a little bit of anxiety watching my baby step day 24 video.

I genuinely understand how perfectionist I was a couple of years ago. Since then, I was pregnant, gave birth to a handsome baby boy, and now he’s an energetic toddler. I never accomplished this type of daily bathroom cleaning, especially after we moved to a three-bathroom home.

My kids’ bathrooms need extra daily attention, but the master bathroom only requires a quick wipe/swish of the toilet and wipe around the sink after brushing our teeth. I don’t clean the mirrors unless I have to, which isn’t a daily task.

My advice is to keep it simple, just like Flylady wants you to. Just clear off the mess that quickly gathers on the bathroom counters, wipe off the toothpaste/fingerprints and swish the toilet…well, maybe continue doing a deeper cleaning in the kids’ bathroom.
